In a significant shift for its smart home ecosystem, Google is preparing to unveil a major redesign of the Google Home app, with the innovative Gemini AI at its core. This transformation aims to enhance user interaction by replacing the traditional Google Assistant with Gemini, which promises a more conversational and intuitive experience.

Redesign Highlights

The upcoming version, identified as Google Home v3.41.50.3, showcases a streamlined interface. Notably, the “Favorites” tab has been rebranded as “Home,” and a new search feature, dubbed “Ask Home,” will facilitate access to Gemini’s capabilities. This search bar invites users to articulate their automation needs or query their home history with ease.

Among the exciting features is the introduction of Gemini Live, which allows for natural, flowing conversations, making interactions with smart devices feel more organic. Users can expect detailed AI-generated event descriptions, notifications, and daily summaries, enhancing the overall functionality of the app.

Additionally, the anticipated Google Home Speaker is set to deliver a 360-degree audio experience, although some features may require a forthcoming “Google Home Premium” subscription for full access.

User Interface Changes

The redesign also involves the removal of the Devices and Settings tab, simplifying navigation. Users can still access their devices through a grid icon located in the Home tab, labeled “All devices.” The new user interface (UI) emphasizes a cleaner aesthetic, with a more organized header that moves the Settings, Inbox, and Lab icons to the account switcher page.

Activity and Automations tabs have been reordered and refreshed with new icons, while the process for adding new devices via QR code has been modified to keep user focus on the scanner area. This subtle yet impactful change aims to enhance the user experience during device setup.

Gemini Integration

Gemini’s integration into the app is highlighted by the prominent “Ask Home” search bar, which encourages users to engage with the AI. Upon first use, users will need to accept new terms and conditions, after which they will be greeted with a dedicated conversation screen for Gemini interactions. This screen will allow users to provide feedback on responses, including thumbs up or down, and regenerate answers as needed.

While these updates are not yet live, Google has confirmed an announcement scheduled for October 1, suggesting that users can anticipate a detailed showcase of these changes shortly thereafter. The early glimpses into the redesign indicate a thoughtful approach to enhancing user engagement and simplifying the smart home experience.
