Netflix quietly killed casting from phones to newer Chromecasts and Google TV Streamer

In a significant shift that has left many Netflix users reeling, the streaming giant has announced the discontinuation of casting support from its mobile applications to a majority of modern smart TVs and streaming devices. This change, detailed in a recent update on Netflix’s help page, indicates that users will now need to rely on the remote controls that accompany their devices for navigation.

According to a Netflix customer service representative, the rationale behind this decision is to enhance the overall customer experience. However, this has sparked considerable backlash among users who favored the convenience of casting content directly from their smartphones. The representative clarified, “If the device has its own remote, you can’t cast,” a statement that has not sat well with many subscribers.

Previously discovered limitation now obsolete

Earlier this year, a casting limitation was identified specifically for users on Netflix’s Standard with ads plan, which allowed casting only on newer Chromecast with Google TV models. This exception has now been entirely revoked, as the updated policy applies universally across all plans, including those without advertisements. The only devices that remain compatible with casting are older Chromecast models and TVs equipped with native Google Cast support.

Netflix’s support documentation confirms that while casting is still functional on these legacy devices, users on ad-supported plans will find themselves unable to utilize this feature. Reports from users on platforms like Reddit corroborate this development, indicating that traditional Chromecast devices maintain their casting capabilities, while Chromecast with Google TV, the Google TV Streamer, and most integrated Google TV smart TVs are no longer available as casting options within the Netflix mobile application.

This change marks a notable pivot in Netflix’s approach to user interaction, raising questions about the future of casting as a feature for its diverse subscriber base.
