New Plex update means you need a pass for remote viewing on your TV

Starting this week, Plex is implementing a notable shift in its streaming policy for Roku users, requiring either a Remote Watch Pass or a Plex Pass for remote streaming. This change marks the beginning of a broader rollout, with plans to extend similar requirements to other platforms such as Android TV, Fire TV, and Apple TV by 2026.

Changes to Remote Streaming

Earlier this year, Plex stirred discussions among its user base with a price increase for the Plex Pass, alongside significant modifications to its remote streaming capabilities. Initially, these changes were limited to mobile devices, but now they are making their way to the Roku app, which will also benefit from enhanced navigation features that were previewed in a recent build.

Under the new guidelines, users will need a Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass to access a Plex server outside its home network. However, server owners have the option to bypass this fee for their users by subscribing to a Plex Pass themselves. The Plex Pass is available at per month, per year, or 0 for a lifetime subscription, while the Remote Watch Pass is priced at per month or annually.

While the price increase earlier this year was met with mixed reactions, some users acknowledged the rationale behind it, considering the service’s substantial growth over the past decade. As these changes roll out more broadly, it will be interesting to observe how the community responds—whether they adapt to the new structure or seek alternatives like Jellyfin.
