What you need to know
The Fitbit app is set to undergo a significant transformation, transitioning into the Google Health app on May 19 through an automatic over-the-air update. This change will ensure that all Fitbit data seamlessly carries over to Google Health, while Google Fit users will have the opportunity to migrate their data later this year.
- Fitbit Premium has been rebranded as Google Health Premium, with an annual subscription now priced at more than its predecessor. However, subscribers to Google AI Pro and Ultra in over 30 countries will enjoy this premium service at no additional cost.
Google’s strategy of integrating acquired companies into its ecosystem is well-documented, and the transition of Fitbit is no exception. Following its acquisition in 2021, the Fitbit app is now evolving into Google Health, marking a pivotal moment in the consolidation of health and fitness data across Google’s platforms. Users can expect a smooth transition, as the updated Google Health app will automatically incorporate existing data from the Fitbit app, eliminating the need for a manual switch. Furthermore, Google Fit users will soon be able to migrate their data to this unified platform.
Among the exciting new features, Google Health will introduce enhanced leaderboards for step tracking and cardio load, fostering a sense of friendly competition among users. Additionally, cycle tracking will receive upgrades, including improved navigation, better logging capabilities, and an interactive calendar.
Google Health Premium is replacing Fitbit Premium, too
The flagship feature of Google Health, known as Health Coach, will require a subscription to Google Health Premium. This service is the new iteration of Fitbit Premium, which previously offered plans at .99 per month and .99 annually. The updated Health Premium plans will maintain the monthly fee but increase the annual cost to .99, reflecting a hike for yearly subscribers.
Despite the price adjustment, the basic Google Health experience will continue to provide essential features such as activity tracking, sleep tracking, health monitoring, and manual wellness logging. The premium tier, however, will introduce AI-driven functionalities powered by Gemini, enhancing the user experience without making the paid subscription a necessity.
Notably, the Health Premium subscription will be complimentary for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in more than 30 countries, a significant expansion from the previous availability of Fitbit Premium, which was limited to the UK. This broadened access will allow more Google One subscribers to take advantage of premium Google Health features without incurring additional costs.
With Google One offering a suite of features that includes exclusive AI tools, substantial cloud storage, and now Google Health Premium, it stands out as one of the most compelling subscription deals available today. The unification of Google’s health offerings into Google Health promises to enhance user experience while preserving the strengths of the original Fitbit app.
