NewPipe, the open-source YouTube application designed for Android, has recently expanded its functionality with the introduction of Android Auto support. This enhancement allows users to enjoy a seamless audio experience while on the road.
The core mission of NewPipe is to provide a lightweight alternative to the conventional YouTube app, while also integrating features from platforms like SoundCloud and Bandcamp. This makes it an appealing choice for those who wish to listen to music and podcasts from various sources without the bloat of traditional apps.
With the release of NewPipe version 0.28.0, users can now stream audio directly from their car’s display. This update facilitates access to playlists and listening history, enriching the in-car entertainment experience.
More specifically, the car integration allows you to access and play streams from your history and from your local and remote bookmarked playlists, search YouTube or any other service you have currently selected in NewPipe, and control the player including the playing queue.
The development of this feature began in 2022, and after extensive work, it is now available to all users. However, it is important to note that NewPipe is not available through the Play Store and must be sideloaded, which comes with its own set of risks.
While the Android Auto version focuses solely on audio playback, there is potential for video support in future updates, depending on Google’s policies and developments.
