Waze is embracing a new feature reminiscent of Google Maps, enhancing the experience for Android Auto users by allowing them to select navigation locations directly from their phone’s screen. This update marks a significant shift from the previous setup, where the app operated independently of the phone, limiting user interaction.
The latest stable update for Waze on Android has rolled out, enabling users to navigate the app on their smartphones while connected to Android Auto. This functionality had been in testing for several months, with limited stable rollouts, but it now appears to be widely accessible. Some users have reported seeing a new pop-up this week, indicating the feature’s availability. In our tests, we successfully accessed and utilized the Waze app on a Pixel 10 while connected to an Android Auto display.
This innovation is not entirely novel; Google Maps has offered similar capabilities for some time. Users can input and select their destinations within the Maps app, with directions seamlessly displayed on their vehicle’s screen via Android Auto. Notably, Google had previously restricted access to Maps while Android Auto was active, but this policy was reversed in 2023, allowing for greater flexibility.
The new Waze feature is particularly beneficial for drivers in vehicles that lack touchscreens, as it provides an alternative method for navigation through rotary controls. For those who do not see the feature immediately, a simple solution may be to force-stop the app and restart it, potentially enabling access to the app even if the pop-up does not appear.
