YouTube adds Android Auto support for background play controls

YouTube has recently expanded its horizons by rolling out support for Android Auto, a move that has generated a mix of anticipation and tempered expectations among users. While the integration allows for some interaction with the platform, it is important to note that the functionality remains quite limited.

Android Auto is designed to seamlessly pipe audio from your phone, but it does not always provide enhanced controls for every application. Over the past few months, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of apps that have begun to showcase their capabilities through Android Auto’s media controls. YouTube has now joined this growing list, with reports of its functionality being observed across a variety of devices, accounts, and app versions, both in beta and stable releases.

However, it’s crucial to clarify that this is not a full-fledged YouTube app for Android Auto. Users will find that they cannot play videos or access a comprehensive set of media controls. Instead, YouTube appears in the dashboard media widget, offering basic features such as play/pause and the ability to skip to the next video. Notably, this skip function allows users to jump to an entirely new video rather than advancing within the current one, a limitation that extends to steering wheel controls as well.

This new feature may prove beneficial for those who enjoy listening to podcasts, clips, or even full-length videos in an audio-only format while on the road. However, it falls short of the comprehensive “YouTube for Android Auto” experience that many users had hoped for. Google has indicated that further developments are possible, leaving the door open for future enhancements.

To utilize this feature, users will need a YouTube Premium subscription, as background play is not available without it. Fortunately, starting in February 2026, the more budget-friendly Premium Lite plan, priced at .99 per month, will include background play, making it a more accessible option for users.
