8 new features arriving with the August 2025 Security Update for Windows 11

August 2, 2025

On August 12, 2025, Microsoft is set to initiate the rollout of the August 2025 Security Update for Windows 11. This update promises not only vital security enhancements but also a suite of new features and visual refinements designed to elevate user experience.

Among the notable improvements in version 24H2 are:

  • A complete reset feature for Windows Recall.
  • Enhanced AI actions for Click to Do.
  • A redesigned Search settings page.
  • A new gamepad keyboard layout with PIN sign-in support.

Additionally, users can look forward to the Reading Coach app available through the Microsoft Store. Once installed, users can utilize Click to Do while on a snapshot, allowing them to select text and access various options through a simple right-click. For those with a Microsoft 365 Copilot subscription, a new action labeled “Draft with Copilot in Word” will enable content drafting based on selected text.

3. Settings with new AI agent

The update introduces a significant enhancement to the Settings app, featuring a new AI agent that transforms the search experience. This AI model allows users to find settings and troubleshoot configuration issues using natural language. For instance, typing “my mouse pointer is too small” will prompt the AI to suggest increasing the pointer size, which can be applied with a click of the “Apply” button. An “undo” option will also be available to revert changes if needed.

This AI agent will be available on Copilot+ PCs equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, with plans for Intel and AMD support in the future. Non-Copilot+ PCs will receive a redesigned search box at the top-center of the app.

4. Quick Machine Recovery new feature

Another key feature included in this update is Quick Machine Recovery (QMR), designed to minimize downtime caused by boot failures. This feature will be enabled by default for Windows 11 Home users, while Pro users will need to configure it manually. When a malfunction is detected, the system will connect to the network to upload diagnostic information to Microsoft servers, allowing for targeted fixes to be delivered directly to the device.

This initiative is part of Microsoft’s broader commitment to security and resilience, particularly in light of past incidents like the CrowdStrike outage in 2024. Pro users can enable QMR by navigating to Settings > System > Recovery > Quick Machine Recovery.

Users can also customize their settings, including toggling the option to continue searching for solutions if none are found. Confirmation of applied fixes can be found under Settings > Windows Update > Update history.

5. Snap Layouts inline descriptions

The Snap Layouts feature is receiving an upgrade with inline descriptions in the flyouts from the maximize button and the top of the screen. Users will now see messages that guide them on how to utilize this feature effectively. For instance, opening the flyout from the maximize button will display the message “Choose where to move this window”, along with a shortcut for quick access.

Moreover, when dragging an app to the top of the screen, users will see the message “Drag a window here to arrange it on your screen”, enhancing the overall usability of Snap Layouts.

6. Settings app with new Search page

In an effort to streamline the search experience, Microsoft is consolidating the “Search permissions” and “Searching Windows” pages into a single, simplified “Search” page. While the underlying settings remain unchanged, this new page aligns with the modern design aesthetic of Windows 11.

7. Gamepad touch keyboard layout with PIN sign-in support

Expanding on its recent introduction of a touch keyboard layout tailored for gamers, Microsoft is now enhancing this layout to facilitate quicker PIN sign-ins using a game controller. This innovation aims to streamline the login process for gamers, ensuring a more efficient user experience.

8. Black Screen of Death new error page

In a significant visual overhaul, Microsoft is replacing the traditional Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) with a new black error page that presents only essential information, including the stop error code and details about the dump creation process. This minimalist approach aims to reduce user confusion during system failures.

This new error page eliminates the QR code and the frown face kaomoji, leading to what is now being referred to as the Black Screen of Death. For users enrolled in the preview program, the error page will appear green instead.

Beyond these visual updates and new features, the cumulative update encompasses a range of fixes and enhancements across various components, including File Explorer, Desktop, ReFS, and graphics. The update will be automatically downloaded and installed, but users can manually check for the latest updates via Settings > Windows Update. For those eager to access the update ahead of its full rollout, enabling the toggle switch for immediate updates is recommended.
