WVU Implements Network Security Measures for Outdated Operating Systems

In a decisive move to bolster the security and integrity of its data and services, West Virginia University (WVU) will remove all computers still operating on the outdated Windows 10 system from its network effective October 1. This initiative affects all campuses, including those within the Health Sciences Center, and marks the conclusion of a two-year campaign urging colleges and departments to transition to Windows 11.

Information Technology Services has consistently emphasized the importance of upgrading devices before the September 30 deadline. For those devices that cannot be updated, replacement has been strongly recommended. The urgency of this transition is underscored by Microsoft’s impending cessation of support for Windows 10 this fall, which means that any remaining devices will no longer receive critical security updates. The presence of these outdated systems on the network poses an unacceptable security risk.

While exemptions to this policy may be considered, they will be rare and must be requested without delay. IT directors seeking to discuss potential exceptions are encouraged to reach out to InfoSec@mail.wvu.edu for further guidance.
