Microsoft declutters Windows 11 File Explorer for GDPR

Microsoft has made a significant move for Windows Insiders with the recent release of the Windows 11 24H2 preview build, 26120.3281, which arrived in both the Dev and Beta channels. This update not only marks the end of the Location History API but also addresses European privacy regulations.

Changes to Cortana and Privacy Features

The Location History API, which had been announced as deprecated just days prior, allowed Cortana—Microsoft’s erstwhile virtual assistant—to access a device’s location history for up to 24 hours, provided location services were enabled. With its removal, Microsoft stated, “With the removal of the Location History feature, location data will no longer be saved locally, and the corresponding settings are also being removed from Settings > Privacy & security > Location page.”

While inquiries regarding the potential for remote storage of location data remain unanswered, the focus on privacy continues with another notable adjustment. To comply with stringent European privacy laws, Microsoft has disabled account-based content in File Explorer for Entra IDs within the European Economic Area (EEA). This change affects various sections including Recent, Favorites, Details Pane, and Recommended content.

This decision is grounded in logic; these sections rely on user data to function effectively, whether it be for displaying recently accessed files or generating personalized recommendations. Although some argue that leveraging user data enhances workflow efficiency, the risk of exposing sensitive information and infringing upon General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requirements cannot be overlooked. Consequently, the removal of these features from File Explorer not only aligns with compliance but also results in a cleaner interface and potentially improved performance, as the application no longer needs to aggregate data for display purposes.

Additional Features and Updates

In addition to these significant changes, Microsoft is rolling out a new feature that allows users to seamlessly resume OneDrive files from their mobile devices to their PCs with a single click. However, a word of caution accompanies this update: an upcoming change to Recall will lead to the deletion of all existing snapshots. Microsoft reassured users, stating, “This important update will improve your experience.”

As for the timeline regarding when these updates will be available to the general public, there is currently no indication. While the Windows 11 24H2 previews are accessible for Dev and Beta channels, users do have the option to switch channels. It is important to note, however, that stability is not guaranteed, even within the Beta channel.
