Microsoft has unveiled the general availability of Windows Backup for Organizations this week, a significant enhancement designed to streamline the management of Windows devices while facilitating a smoother transition to Windows 11.
This innovative feature was initially introduced at Microsoft Ignite in 2024 and has been accessible in public preview since May 2025. Following a comprehensive Windows update in September 2025, the service is now being rolled out extensively to organizations. It is specifically tailored for devices connected to Microsoft Entra and requires manual activation through Intune or group policy.
Once activated, Windows Backup can efficiently preserve user settings, preferences, and applications installed via the Microsoft Store from both Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems. This capability allows for automatic restoration of data when setting up a new device or upgrading to Windows 11, enabling users to resume their work with minimal configuration. Microsoft asserts that this new backup option significantly simplifies IT management by safeguarding user settings and applications during device renewals or replacements.
Reliable backup and recovery capabilities
According to Microsoft, this feature ensures a consistent experience throughout migrations and plays a crucial role in maintaining business continuity through dependable backup and recovery capabilities. The data is securely stored in the Exchange Online cloud, located within the tenant’s designated region. Administrators can easily monitor the data’s location through the Admin Center under Organization Profile.
Microsoft underscores its commitment to data security, stating that all customer information is encrypted and accessible only to authorized personnel, such as those involved in troubleshooting or ensuring regulatory compliance. The company clarifies that the data will solely be utilized for purposes related to delivering the agreed-upon services, including enhancements to security features.
Windows Backup for Organizations serves as a valuable addition to the existing suite of management and migration tools. However, it is important to note that this feature is not designed as a comprehensive system backup. Administrators are required to establish backup and recovery policies prior to utilizing the service, ensuring a tailored approach to organizational needs.
