Microsoft is making strides in enhancing user experience with its latest updates to Notepad and Paint, currently being tested by Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev channels. These updates are part of a broader initiative to integrate artificial intelligence into everyday applications, providing users with innovative tools that streamline their workflow.
Among the most notable additions is Notepad’s new Write feature, designed to assist users in generating text effortlessly. This feature allows for quick drafting based on user prompts or can enhance existing content with AI support. Users can simply right-click to insert new text or select existing text for reference. Once activated through the Copilot menu, a prompt appears for users to input their instructions, and the AI-generated text will seamlessly integrate into the document. Users have the flexibility to accept, discard, or refine the output based on their needs.
Notepad is also expanding its AI capabilities with two previously introduced features: Summarize, which condenses document content, and Rewrite, which modifies tone and structure. These tools collectively aim to enhance productivity and creativity for users.
Innovations in Paint
In parallel, Microsoft Paint is receiving a suite of AI-powered enhancements. A standout addition is the new Sticker generator, which allows users to create custom stickers by describing their desired designs. This feature is easily accessible via a button in the Copilot menu, making it simple to generate stickers that can be incorporated into projects or shared across applications. Additionally, Paint will introduce an Object select tool, utilizing AI to facilitate smart selections, thereby simplifying the process of isolating and manipulating elements within images.
The Snipping Tool is also undergoing significant improvements, including the introduction of a Perfect screenshot button. This feature intelligently resizes screenshots based on the selected content, ensuring users capture exactly what they need with minimal effort. Furthermore, a new Color picker will enhance precision in color selection, displaying HEX, RGB, or HSL values, and allowing for zoom functionality for detailed work.
To access Notepad’s Write feature, users must be signed into their Microsoft accounts, which will operate under a credits system similar to other AI functionalities in Windows 11. While Microsoft has yet to disclose potential pricing for these credits, the anticipation surrounding these updates highlights the company’s commitment to integrating AI into its software ecosystem, ultimately aiming to enhance user productivity and creativity.
