Microsoft has officially launched Windows Server 2025, marking a significant milestone in its server offerings. This release comes after initial details surfaced earlier this year, with the general availability announced on November 1st.
The announcement was made through the Windows Release Health Center, where Microsoft confirmed that Windows Server 2025 is now available. This version is classified as LTSC (Long-Term Servicing Channel), indicating a commitment to long-term support. Mainstream support is set to continue until October 2029, followed by extended support lasting until October 2034, as detailed in the release notes.
Windows Server 2025 with Interesting New Functions
Windows Server 2025 introduces a suite of innovative features that enhance its functionality. One of the standout capabilities is hot patching, which allows updates to be applied without requiring a system restart. This feature was available for testing in the preview version since late September and is touted as a means for IT administrators to enjoy more personal time, potentially reducing the need for frequent restarts from twelve times a year to just once every three months.
In addition to hot patching, the new server includes an easily activated OpenSSH server, improved security for SMB shares, and enhancements to Hyper-V. The Active Directory has also received upgrades aimed at bolstering its security measures.
However, as with any new software release, some known issues have been identified. According to the Windows Release Health Notes, users may encounter English text during the installation process, and systems equipped with a high number of CPU cores—specifically those with 256 logical cores—might experience unexpected behavior. This could manifest as installation failures, prolonged boot times, or even blue screens during startup. Additionally, in iSCSI environments, there may be challenges accessing boot devices.
IT administrators can access Windows Server 2025 through the standard channels. While the German website still references the preview version, ISO images and VHD files are readily available on the evaluation page dedicated to Windows Server 2025.
