Microsoft starts to remove AI from some of its Windows 11 apps

Microsoft is recalibrating its approach to the Copilot Artificial Intelligence (AI) assistant, a tool designed to enhance productivity across its suite of applications. This AI-driven assistant serves as a “copilot” for various tasks, including drafting documents, analyzing data, summarizing meetings, creating images, and automating routine responsibilities.

Feature Adjustments Across Applications

In Microsoft Word, Copilot can assist users by drafting content, restructuring documents, and adjusting tone. Excel users benefit from help with formulas, data analysis, and chart creation, while PowerPoint users receive support in building presentations and updating slides. These enhancements aim to significantly reduce work time for users. However, Microsoft is adopting a more measured approach with built-in tools in Windows 11, such as Notepad and Snipping Tool. This shift aligns with the company’s commitment to streamline the integration of Copilot, focusing on genuinely useful experiences.

In a recent statement, Microsoft articulated its intention: “You will see us be more intentional about how and where Copilot integrates across Windows, focusing on experiences that are genuinely useful and well-crafted.”

Notably, Notepad has shed its Copilot branding, now referred to as “Writing Tools.” Despite this rebranding, the AI functionalities remain intact. Users can still generate text, rewrite content, adjust tone, and toggle between casual and formal writing styles. Microsoft has redefined these capabilities as “Smarter writing tools.”

How to Use the Writing Tools

For those looking to leverage these features in Notepad, Microsoft provides a straightforward guide:

  1. Open Notepad after installing a fresh copy.
  2. Type or paste the text you wish to edit.
  3. Highlight the portion of text you’d like to improve.
  4. Select Rewrite to refine clarity, tone, or structure.
  5. Alternatively, choose Summarise to condense longer text into key points.
  6. Review and apply the suggested changes.

To disable these features, users can follow these steps:

  1. Access Settings within Notepad.
  2. Navigate to Advanced Features.
  3. Toggle the AI features (Rewrite/Summarise) off.

Microsoft continues to acknowledge that Writing Tools utilizes AI when users engage with the feature and begin typing prompts.

Changes to Snipping Tool

In contrast, the Snipping Tool is undergoing a different transformation. This application, which allows users to capture, edit, and share screenshots or screen recordings, has seen the complete removal of AI functionalities. The Copilot button has been eliminated from the latest version of the app, meaning that users with the most up-to-date Snipping Tool from the Microsoft Store will no longer find any AI features available.

While Notepad has embraced a rebranding strategy, the Snipping Tool has experienced a complete withdrawal of AI capabilities.

Future Developments

Despite these adjustments, Microsoft is moving forward with plans to introduce AI agents to the Windows taskbar as an optional feature. These AI-powered assistants will be readily accessible, designed to:

  • Answer questions
  • Automate tasks
  • Interact with files and applications
  • Act on behalf of the user

This feature promises to enhance desktop organization by minimizing the number of open windows, although it is still undergoing testing before a broader rollout.
