Microsoft Suddenly Issues Emergency Update For Windows 10 Users

In an unexpected move, Microsoft has rolled out a timely update for Windows 10 users who have encountered a significant issue preventing the installation of essential security updates. This emergency update was issued without prior notice, coinciding with the announcement of November’s critical security vulnerabilities.

Details of the Update

The out-of-band update specifically targets Windows 10 users who are unable to enroll in the extended security updates (ESU) program, a service that Microsoft has made effectively complimentary following the controversial end-of-life for Windows 10 last month. The flaw that prompted this update was identified only recently.

According to Microsoft, this “security update for devices that are not enrolled in the Windows 10 consumer ESU resolves an issue that was preventing affected customers from receiving essential security updates.” The update is cumulative, encompassing security fixes and improvements from the October 14, 2025, security update.

Installation Instructions

To install the emergency update, users are advised to follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Windows Update settings page.
  2. Select “Check for updates.”
  3. Install the out-of-band (OOB) update (KB5071959).
  4. Restart your device to complete the installation.

Microsoft also emphasizes the importance of enrolling in the Windows 10 Consumer ESU program to continue receiving updates. Users can do this by utilizing the ESU enrollment wizard, after which they will begin receiving Extended Security Updates via Windows Update.

Challenges with ESU Enrollment

Windows Latest has reported that some users are facing challenges with the ESU program, particularly those located in Europe. Issues include the ESU being “temporarily unavailable” for certain users and a bug that triggers an error message stating, “Something went wrong,” without further clarification.

This emergency update was released on November 11, coinciding with the monthly “Patch Tuesday” security updates. As noted by Windows Latest, Microsoft has addressed the issue on the same day critical security updates requiring ESU were also made available.

Given the circumstances, it is highly advisable for users to install this update promptly to ensure their systems remain secure.
