Microsoft’s August 2025 Patch Tuesday Update: Addressing SSD Vulnerabilities

In a proactive move to enhance cybersecurity, Microsoft rolled out a Defender security update during the August 2025 Patch Tuesday cycle, specifically targeting the Lumma stealer and other similar malware threats. This update included the Windows 11 24H2 cumulative package, designated as KB5063878. However, the deployment was not without its challenges, as early installations encountered an error code, 0x80240069, which Microsoft promptly acknowledged and worked to resolve.

As the community began testing the update, a concerning pattern emerged. Certain solid-state drives (SSDs) exhibited troubling behavior when subjected to sustained sequential writes of approximately 50 GB. These drives became inaccessible and displayed unreadable SMART telemetry, raising alarms among users and experts alike. While initial investigations have primarily pointed to SSDs as the source of the issue, the impact on traditional spinning hard disk drives remains unverified.

A notable contribution to this investigation came from Japanese tester NichePCGamer, who published a detailed matrix involving 21 different drives along with a reproducible testing procedure. The process involved copying a large game folder, writing an archive of around 62 GB filled with video files to the target SSD, and then decompressing that archive on the same device. Failures were most frequently observed when the controller utilization exceeded 60% during these continuous write operations.

The reported failures included several Phison-based NVMe models, alongside other drives utilizing various controllers. An alarming aspect of this issue is that symptoms often reappear after a reboot, which may temporarily restore visibility but does not resolve the underlying fault. This creates a significant risk of file corruption, particularly if users attempt to repeat the same workload.

As investigations continue, both Microsoft and SSD vendors are diligently working to uncover the root cause of these issues. However, a definitive report has yet to be released. In the interim, users with SSDs are advised to take precautionary measures: backing up important data, avoiding lengthy sequential transfers on systems updated to KB5063878, and staying informed through vendor and Microsoft advisories regarding any SSD-specific firmware, driver, or operating system fixes.
