Microsoft’s new handheld gaming mode, exclusive to ROG Xbox Ally, has just leaked for every handheld running Windows 11 — all you need is the 25H2 update and a few registry tweaks

Earlier this year, Microsoft and Asus unveiled the ROG Xbox Ally, a refined iteration of the original ROG Ally, now featuring Xbox branding. This collaboration extends beyond mere aesthetics; it aims to deliver a cohesive experience designed to enhance Windows functionality on handheld devices. The ROG Xbox Ally will come pre-installed with a full-screen Xbox app, which will launch by default, effectively replacing Windows 11 for users. Initially intended as a unique feature for the ROG Xbox Ally, this new experience has surprisingly become accessible to a broader audience.

Early Access to Full-Screen Xbox Experience

Reports from The Verge’s Tom Warren indicate that the full-screen Xbox experience, originally tailored for the ROG Xbox Ally, has leaked ahead of its official launch. This means that any handheld device running Windows can now enjoy Microsoft’s innovative handheld gaming mode before the ROG Xbox Ally even hits the market next month. A comprehensive guide on Reddit provides step-by-step instructions for installation, making it relatively straightforward for those familiar with Windows.

Devices such as the original ROG Ally, Lenovo’s Legion Go, and various other PC handhelds are eligible for this update. To access the new features, users must be part of the Windows Insider program and navigate to the Release Preview channel. Some registry adjustments may be necessary if the “Enter full-screen experience on startup” toggle does not appear immediately. Once configured, a simple restart will transport users directly into the new Xbox interface, consolidating their favorite games from platforms like Steam, Epic Games, and Battle.net into a single, user-friendly space.

Windows Central conducted tests on the original ROG Ally and observed significant performance enhancements, with frame rates in Shadow of the Tomb Raider increasing from 29 FPS to 38 FPS. Additionally, users can expect an extra hour of battery life. These improvements primarily stem from disabling unnecessary background processes and startup applications, rather than any fundamental changes to the Windows kernel.

It is worth noting that users are not confined to the full-screen experience; the option to Alt-Tab back to the traditional desktop environment remains intact. However, Microsoft advises utilizing a mouse and keyboard for this purpose, as the interface is not specifically designed for handheld use.
