Microsoft has taken decisive action to address installation issues stemming from its March 2026 non-security preview update. The company released an out-of-band update aimed at rectifying the problems that arose shortly after the rollout of the optional cumulative update (KB5079391) for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2.
Details of the Update
On Thursday, the update introduced a total of 29 enhancements, including notable improvements to Smart App Control and display functionalities. However, users quickly encountered errors indicating that “Some update files are missing or have problems. We’ll try to download the update again later. Error code: (0x80073712).” This prompted Microsoft to halt the rollout and acknowledge the installation complications.
In response to the mounting concerns, Microsoft issued the emergency update KB5086672 on Tuesday, designed specifically for the affected Windows 11 systems. This update supersedes the problematic KB5079391 and consolidates all previous updates, ensuring that users receive the necessary protections and improvements alongside the installation fix.
According to Microsoft, devices configured to receive updates automatically will be offered this new update through Windows Update as soon as it becomes available. For those who prefer manual installations, the update can be accessed through Settings > Windows Update, followed by selecting Download & install.
Recent Challenges and Updates
This latest emergency update follows another recent fix addressing significant issues caused by the Patch Tuesday security updates earlier this month. Those updates disrupted sign-ins with Microsoft accounts across various applications, including Teams, OneDrive, the Edge web browser, and Microsoft 365 Copilot.
Moreover, since the beginning of the month, Microsoft has rolled out two additional out-of-band updates targeting hotpatch-enabled Windows 11 Enterprise devices. These updates addressed a Bluetooth device visibility bug and several security vulnerabilities within the Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) management tool.
Additionally, Microsoft has provided guidance for resolving access issues on C: drives of Samsung Windows 11 laptops, which were linked to problematic versions of the Samsung Galaxy Connect and Samsung Continuity Service applications.
