Enhancements in PowerToys 0.1
This week, Microsoft unveiled PowerToys 0.1, showcasing a series of thoughtful enhancements across its suite of utilities, while maintaining its unique version numbering system. The latest iteration, dubbed PowerToys 0.100, introduces a host of new features and improvements designed to elevate user experience.
The release notes highlight several significant updates:
- Shortcut Guide improvements: Previously, the Shortcut Guide commandeered the entire screen. Now, it has been elegantly redesigned to appear as a side pane. This new layout automatically detects the active application upon launch, displaying only the relevant shortcuts while expanding the range of shortcuts available from both Windows and enabled PowerToys utilities.
- Command Palette improvements: The Command Palette now boasts an extension gallery, allowing users to effortlessly browse, discover, install, update, and remove extensions without leaving the application. Additionally, the dock supports multiple monitors, each with its own configuration, and a new Battery widget has been added to the performance monitor.
- PowerDisplay improvements: PowerDisplay has undergone significant enhancements, starting up faster and offering improved monitor identification and settings preservation. A new Max compatibility mode has also been introduced for displays that may not function correctly.
- ZoomIt improvements: Mark Russinovich’s ZoomIt has been revitalized within PowerToys, now featuring support for a webcam overlay during recordings and the ability to append multiple clips with transitions.
- Platform improvements: The transition to .NET 10 has optimized PowerToys’ performance, reducing the installation footprint by 15%. The auto-update feature has become more reliable, while Quick Access and Workspaces have migrated from WPF to WinUI, the latter receiving a user interface refresh that enhances typography, spacing, and overall layout.
- More improvements: Additional noteworthy enhancements include the Keyboard Manager adopting the new WinUI editor by default, a Refresh Connections feature in Mouse Without Borders, improved high DPI and multi-monitor reliability in Quick Accent, an option to disable file preview tooltips in Peek, and various calculator improvements in PowerToys Run.
Users can conveniently download PowerToys from the Microsoft Store, the Windows Package Manager (winget), or directly from the web.
