Powertoys 0.90: Command palette allows quick program start

Microsoft has unveiled version 0.90.0 of its Windows Powertoys, introducing an innovative feature known as the “Command Palette.”

The latest iteration of Powertoys, a collection of powerful utilities designed to enhance the Windows experience, now includes this new functionality aimed at streamlining user interactions. The Command Palette is envisioned as an evolution of the existing Powertoys Run module, offering a more intuitive and expansive interface.

With the Command Palette, users can initiate applications swiftly by simply pressing the Windows key, along with Alt and the space bar. By typing just a few letters of the desired program, users can efficiently filter through options and launch their selection using the cursor keys or by hitting the Enter key. This enhancement not only expedites the process of finding applications but also provides a more versatile alternative to navigating through the Start menu.

Other minor corrections and improvements

In addition to the Command Palette, the update addresses several minor bugs and introduces functional improvements. Notably, the color picker has transitioned from Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) to .Net WPF, enhancing theme consistency across various modes. Furthermore, users can now delete files directly from the preview (Peek) feature, thereby streamlining file management.

The New+ function, which facilitates the creation of predefined files and directories, has also been upgraded to support variables in template file names. This allows for the incorporation of date or environment variables, enabling users to customize their file creation processes more effectively.

Users can initiate the update directly within Powertoys. By navigating to the “General” section, they can click on the “Check for updates” button, which will prompt the installation of any available updates.
