In response to the growing discontent, Microsoft has made minor adjustments, such as introducing folder creation for organizing shortcuts in late 2022. However, a more significant redesign is anticipated in 2025, leaving the current Start menu largely unchanged since its launch in October 2021.
For those who find the Windows 11 Start menu less than satisfactory, exploring third-party alternatives may offer a more efficient and customizable experience. A variety of applications are available that can replace the default Start menu, providing users with a familiar interface and enhanced personalization options. Start11
Stardock’s Start11 is available for .99 per license and offers a selection of seven distinct Start menu layouts. Users can opt for styles reminiscent of Windows 7 or the Modern design, which features a traditional two-column display. The Windows 10 style combines a familiar menu with a tiled screen, while four variations of the Windows 11 style provide additional features and flexibility compared to the built-in menu. Personally, I prefer the Modern style for its two-column layout.
Regardless of the chosen style, Start11 allows for extensive customization of the menu’s appearance and functionality. Users can select between a full-width or compact design, modify the All Apps list, add or remove shortcuts, and adjust colors and transparency. Furthermore, Start11 enhances the Windows 11 Taskbar, enabling users to change its color, size, and position on multiple monitors, as well as control the behavior of Taskbar buttons.
Another appealing feature is the ability to manage folders and shortcuts directly from the Start menu, a function reminiscent of earlier Windows versions. Should users wish to revert to the default Start menu, they can easily do so by changing settings or uninstalling Start11.
StartAllBack
For those seeking a simpler alternative, StartAllBack is available for .99 per license. This program provides a straightforward Start menu replacement, allowing users to select from three themes: Proper 11, Kinda 10, and Remastered 7. Each theme features a traditional two-column layout, with aesthetic differences that cater to personal preferences.
After selecting a theme, users can customize the menu’s style and functionality, including icon sizes, modern app organization, and shortcut display options. Like Start11, StartAllBack offers enhancements for the Taskbar, including custom images for the Start button and the ability to position the Taskbar in various locations—features that were removed in Windows 11.
Additionally, StartAllBack integrates with File Explorer, allowing users to choose between different interfaces and restore classic context menus from Windows 10. Uninstalling the program will revert the Start menu to its original state.
Open Shell Menu
