Windows 11 update breaks Veeam recovery, causes connection errors

Microsoft and Veeam are currently addressing a significant issue affecting users of Windows 11 24H2 systems, particularly those attempting to restore data using Veeam Recovery Media. This problem arises for users operating on builds 26100.3194 and higher, leading to frustrating connection errors during the restoration process.

Details of the Connection Errors

The root cause of these connection failures remains unidentified, though Veeam suggests that the recent KB5051987 Windows 11 24H2 February update may be a contributing factor. Users encountering this issue will find that the Veeam Agent for Windows reports network connection failures when trying to restore files from either a Veeam Backup & Replication backup server or an SMB network share.

The error message displayed during these attempts is quite technical, stating: “Connection problems. Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. Failed to establish connection: no valid IP addresses were found. Unable to establish authenticated client-server connection. A call to SSPI failed, see inner exception. The Local Security Authority cannot be contacted.” Additionally, when restoring from a shared folder over SMB, users may encounter the message: “The remote procedure call failed and did not execute.”

As a temporary solution, Veeam recommends that users affected by these issues utilize Recovery Media generated from devices running older Windows 11 builds, specifically build 26100.3037 or lower. This workaround is essential while Microsoft and Veeam continue their investigation into the problem.

In an advisory published on Tuesday, Veeam clarified, “The Veeam Recovery Media is based on the Microsoft Windows RE and contains proprietary components of the Windows operating system. As such, Veeam cannot provide a pre-generated Veeam Recovery Media image.” They further noted that while Recovery Media from one machine can typically be used for bare metal restores on another, there may be missing proprietary drivers necessary for initializing hardware if the original machine had different configurations.

Veeam’s products are widely trusted, with over 550,000 customers globally, including 82% of Fortune 500 companies and 74% of all Global 2,000 firms. This extensive user base highlights the importance of resolving the current issues swiftly to maintain customer confidence.

In February, Microsoft addressed another problem associated with the KB5051987 security update, which had disrupted Outlook email and calendar functionalities on Windows 24H2 systems, showcasing the ongoing challenges that arise with software updates.
