Windows 11 update takes out USB ports in recovery mode

Microsoft has acknowledged a significant issue affecting users of Windows 11 version 25H2 (2025 Update) following the installation of security update KB5066835, released on October 14. This bug disrupts the functionality of USB mice and keyboards within the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), a crucial diagnostic toolset designed to assist in troubleshooting boot failures.

Details of the Bug

The malfunction occurs specifically when users attempt to access WinRE, which can be triggered automatically after multiple failed startup attempts or manually by interrupting the boot process twice. While USB devices operate normally within the Windows environment itself, their failure in WinRE presents a challenge for users trying to resolve critical PC issues.

In response to the growing concerns, Microsoft has stated that its engineering team is actively working on a fix, promising a resolution “in the coming days.” However, this assurance may offer little solace to those currently grappling with nonfunctional input devices while attempting to troubleshoot their systems.

Historical Context

This predicament draws parallels to the early days of Windows 95, where initial USB support was hindered by BIOS firmware limitations. Users then faced similar frustrations, as USB keyboards were rendered useless for accessing BIOS settings, forcing them to rely on legacy PS/2 keyboards.

Additional Issues Identified

Beyond the USB issue, the recent update has unveiled other complications. Users have reported problems related to smartcard authentication within Windows Cryptographic Services, failures of the Windows Update Standalone Installer when attempting installations from shared folders, and difficulties with server-side applications dependent on Internet Information Services (IIS), as highlighted by The Register last week.
