Microsoft has recently lifted an upgrade block that had hindered certain users of the Safe Exam Browser from installing the Windows 11 2024 Update, a decision stemming from compatibility concerns. This open-source software is widely utilized by educational institutions, professional certification organizations, and businesses to create secure environments for online examinations, effectively curbing cheating by limiting access to unauthorized applications and websites.
The compatibility hold was initially implemented in September to protect Windows 11, version 24H2 users from potential issues when using Safe Exam Browser version 3.7 or earlier. With the developers now addressing this known issue, Microsoft encourages users to upgrade to the latest version of the Safe Exam Browser (3.8 or later) before proceeding with the Windows 11 24H2 update.
In a recent Windows release health update, Microsoft stated, “If your device still encounters this safeguard hold 48 hours after updating to the latest version of the application, you will need to contact Safe Exam Browser Support for more information on the resolution.” Furthermore, users attempting to install Windows 11, version 24H2 via the media creation tool can continue with the installation process by following the prompts provided during the setup.
Windows 11 24H2 rolling out to everyone, still blocked on some PCs
Last week, Microsoft confirmed that the Windows 11 24H2 feature update is now available for all compatible PCs, with the exception of those still under safeguard holds. The company also resolved a known issue that had previously prevented the update from being delivered through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) following the installation of the April 2025 security updates.
Additionally, Microsoft has addressed a “latent code issue” that resulted in some PCs being upgraded to Windows 11 despite existing Intune policies designed to block such upgrades. In recent months, the tech giant has also removed other compatibility holds affecting Windows 11 24H2 upgrades for specific ASUS devices and users of AutoCAD and Asphalt 8: Airborne.
However, certain upgrade blocks remain in place due to incompatible hardware and software, particularly affecting computers equipped with integrated cameras, Dirac audio enhancement software, or the Easy Anti-Cheat application.
Windows 11 24H2 began its rollout in May 2024 for enterprise testing among customers enrolled in the Windows Insider Release Preview Channel, with a broader release to eligible devices running Windows 11 22H2/23H2 taking place in October.
