Microsoft is poised to initiate the rollout of the April 2026 Security Update for Windows 11 on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. This cumulative update brings a host of new features, enhancements, and security fixes, all designed to improve user experience and system performance. Among the notable changes are updates to Smart App Control, enhancements to Windows Narrator, and various design tweaks in the Settings app.
1. Smart App Control Behavior Changes
The Smart App Control (SAC) feature has undergone significant modifications, eliminating the need for an operating system reinstallation to manage it. Accessible through the Windows Security app, SAC now allows only trusted applications to run, effectively safeguarding the system from untrusted software. Previously, this feature was limited to new installations and required a complete setup to disable. With the April 2026 Security Update, users can easily toggle this feature on or off via Windows Security > App & Browser Control > Smart App Control.
2. Windows Narrator with Image Description
The Windows Narrator feature has been enhanced to generate image descriptions using AI, a capability that was previously restricted to Copilot+ PCs. Now, this functionality operates without the need for a local AI model, as it leverages Copilot to analyze and provide descriptions. Users connected to a Microsoft 365 Family plan will benefit from this integration. If users prefer not to see this option, they can disable suggested content in the Settings.
6. Pen Page in Settings Changes
Updates are also on the horizon for the pen settings page, which will now include a new option to configure the “Same as Copilot key” feature, allowing it to open the same application as the “Copilot” key.
7. File Explorer Updates
While the upcoming update does not introduce any major visual changes to File Explorer, it does bring several fixes and a new accessibility feature. Users will now be able to utilize Voice Typing to rename files. Additionally, the update addresses a white flash bug that occurred when launching new tabs or windows with “This PC” set as the default startup page, as well as a flash issue when resizing elements within the application. Reliability improvements have also been made to streamline the process of unlocking files downloaded from the internet.
8. Display New Refresh Rate Support
This update also enhances display capabilities, allowing the system to recognize refresh rates of 1000Hz or higher. For users with native USB4 monitor connections, the controller will now enter a low-power state during sleep mode to conserve battery life. Furthermore, auto-rotation functionality has been improved for better reliability after waking from sleep, and HDR performance has been enhanced for displays with non-compliant DisplayID 2.0 blocks.
