In response, Microsoft appears poised to reinforce its gaming stronghold, introducing enhancements to the Game Bar that promise to streamline the experience on these new handhelds.
Enhancements to the Game Bar
The latest update from Xbox Wire reveals a refreshed look for the Game Bar app, designed to elevate the gaming experience while providing real-time statistical insights. The new interface is softer on the eyes and offers quicker access to essential tools, such as the Capture and Performance widgets. Users can now navigate the Widget Store with greater ease, whether they are using a separate controller or one integrated into their device.
The overarching aim is to “ensure a smoother experience when using Compact Mode on PCs and Windows Handhelds,” a phrase that underscores Microsoft’s commitment to optimizing gameplay across various platforms. During a recent trial of Compact Mode on a desktop, the interface evoked memories of Steam’s Big Picture mode, featuring a larger font and a user-friendly layout. While it may seem somewhat out of place on a 32-inch monitor, the design is undoubtedly tailored for the compact screens of handheld devices.
Expanding Game Pass Offerings
In a related development, Microsoft has expanded its Game Pass service, allowing subscribers to stream more games if they already own a copy. A notable addition is Assassin’s Creed Shadows, a title from Ubisoft’s esteemed franchise. Although it is not currently available on Game Pass, players who purchase the game can utilize the service to stream it from the cloud—a valuable feature that now applies to over 50 titles, with more on the horizon.
Furthermore, Microsoft is leveraging its extensive publishing reach to entice free-to-play gamers into considering a Game Pass subscription. Subscribers will receive exclusive bonuses in popular free games such as League of Legends, Overwatch 2, and Call of Duty: Warzone, enhancing the appeal of the subscription model.
