Microsoft has unveiled an exciting update for the Start menu in Windows 11, now offering a larger and more customizable interface that enhances user experience. This revamped Start menu, which has been in the works since early testing phases in April, is officially available for users in the Dev Channel as of today.

The Windows Insider team highlights that the new scrollable Start menu simplifies app access. Users will find that all applications are now prominently displayed at the top level, eliminating the need to navigate through multiple pages. This change is designed to streamline the user experience, making it easier to launch apps quickly.

In addition to the scrollable feature, users can now customize their Start menu further by disabling the recommended section, allowing for a more personalized view of their applications. Two new display options are also available: the category view, which organizes apps by type, and the grid view, which presents them in a traditional alphabetical format.

Microsoft has tailored the size of the Start menu based on the device’s screen dimensions. For larger monitors, users can expect to see up to eight columns of pinned apps, six recommendations, and four categories. Conversely, smaller devices will showcase six columns of pinned apps, four recommendations, and three categories, ensuring a cohesive experience across various screen sizes.

Another noteworthy addition is the mobile device button, which allows users to expand or collapse the Phone Link interface directly from the Start menu. This integration aims to enhance connectivity and ease of use for mobile device users.

Moreover, Windows 11 users now have the flexibility to customize their lock screen widgets. This feature enables them to add, remove, and rearrange widgets according to their preferences, further personalizing their experience.

Lastly, the latest Dev Channel build introduces a Gamepad keyboard update, enabling users to sign into their PCs using a PIN code via a controller. This enhancement is part of Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to optimize Windows 11 for handheld gaming devices, including the newly announced ROG Xbox Ally.
