This Microsoft feature is accidentally ‘blocking’ Google Chrome on Windows – The Times of India

Microsoft’s Family Safety tool is currently causing disruptions for users attempting to launch Google Chrome on various Windows devices. Reports indicate that the issue first emerged on June 3, with a growing number of users expressing their frustrations as the days progressed. Those who have activated the Family Safety feature are experiencing difficulties, as Chrome either fails to open or crashes immediately upon launch. Interestingly, alternative browsers such as Firefox and Opera remain unaffected by this glitch.

What is Microsoft’s Family Safety feature

The Family Safety feature is widely utilized by parents and educational institutions through Microsoft 365 subscriptions, designed to restrict online access for children. Unfortunately, this bug has persisted for over two weeks, and as of the latest updates, Microsoft has not provided any official communication regarding a resolution.

Google Chrome acknowledges the issue

According to a report from The Verge, Chrome support manager Ellen T has confirmed that the team has investigated the problem and identified its root cause. She stated, “Our team has investigated these reports and determined the cause of this behavior. For some users, Chrome is unable to run when Microsoft Family Safety is enabled.”

Despite Chrome’s acknowledgment of the issue, Microsoft has yet to release a public statement or a timeline for a fix. A Chromium engineer noted in a bug report dated June 10, “We’ve not heard anything from Microsoft about a fix being rolled out. They have provided guidance to users who contact them about how to get Chrome working again, but I wouldn’t think that would have a large effect.”

In the meantime, some users have discovered a workaround: renaming the Chrome executable file—changing it from Chrome.exe to Chrome1.exe—allows the browser to function normally. Additionally, disabling the “filter inappropriate websites” option within Family Safety resolves the issue, albeit at the cost of removing content restrictions for children.

While this situation appears to be an unintended consequence of the Family Safety feature, it is worth noting that Microsoft has previously faced scrutiny for its attempts to encourage users to switch from Chrome to its own Edge browser. These efforts have included popups, misleading messages, and even alterations to search results.
