Cinemark 2nd Quarter Revenue Surges 28% to $941 Million Off of ‘Minecraft’ and ‘Lilo & Stitch’

In the second quarter of 2025, Cinemark experienced a remarkable surge in revenue, reporting a 28% year-over-year increase that brought in 1 million. This growth was largely fueled by a strong turnout from audiences for popular films such as “A Minecraft Movie,” “Sinners,” and “Lilo & Stitch.”

Market Recovery and Performance

The uptick in revenue was anticipated following a challenging second quarter in 2024, which saw delays due to strikes affecting major releases like Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine.” The disappointing box office performance of Universal’s “The Fall Guy” and Warner Bros.’ “Furiosa” had also contributed to a decline, with domestic box office grosses dipping below billion for the first time in a non-pandemic Q2 since 2001.

However, the standout performance of “A Minecraft Movie,” which has grossed 4 million domestically, played a pivotal role in helping the quarter match the .6 billion total from the same period in 2023. This resurgence allowed theater chains to stabilize after a sluggish start to the year.

Key Financial Metrics

  • EPS: Ahead of the earnings release, Zacks Investment Research projected Cinemark’s quarterly revenue at 7.5 million and earnings at 78 cents per share. While the company met its revenue expectations, it reported earnings of million, translating to 63 cents per diluted share, falling short of projections.
  • Attendance: Cinemark sold 58 million tickets during the quarter, marking a 16% increase from the previous year and a substantial 57% rise from the first quarter of 2025. This resulted in admissions revenue of 3.4 million.
  • Concessions: Concessions sales remained a vital revenue stream, generating 8 million, with patrons spending an average of .34 each.

Sean Gamble, Cinemark’s president and CEO, remarked, “The second quarter once again showcased the strength and resilience of theatrical exhibition as a surge in summer moviegoing momentum reflected the enduring consumer appeal for larger-than-life cinematic experiences. Cinemark fully capitalized on the robust second quarter film slate to deliver record-level results, including multiple box office achievements, all-time high food and beverage per caps, our highest domestic quarterly revenue ever, and one of our most profitable quarters in the history of our company.”

Despite this positive performance, Cinemark’s stock has recently faced challenges, declining 7.7% over the past five trading days to close at .87 per share on Thursday.

Looking Ahead

As Cinemark looks to the future, the company is poised to benefit from a successful July at the box office, where domestic grosses reached .1 billion, bolstered by films like “Jurassic World Rebirth” and “Superman.” Additionally, earlier this month, Cinemark expanded its partnership with Korean premium format company CJ 4DPlex, securing a deal to add 20 more ScreenX auditoriums to its circuit.
