Whispers in the gaming community suggest that Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 may be on the horizon, possibly making a surprise debut before the year concludes. While an official announcement is still pending, the game has reportedly been rated by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). A listing for the sequel briefly surfaced on the ESRB website, indicating a “Mature” rating due to its themes of blood and gore, strong language, and violence, which aligns perfectly with the franchise’s reputation.
As highlighted by Gematsu and relayed by PCGamesN, the ESRB page has since been removed, but the implications are clear. Cold Iron Studios is actively working on a new title that aims to build upon the success of the original Aliens: Fireteam Elite. Although the studio has not confirmed that this project is a direct sequel, the excitement surrounding the potential release is palpable.
Last year, a presentation detailing the sequel, codenamed Project Macondo, made its way onto Reddit. This presentation hinted at a fresh story campaign, levels featuring alternate paths, and aliens exhibiting evolved enemy intelligence and behaviors. In 2023, Daybreak announced its role as the publisher for Cold Iron’s upcoming game, describing it as an “exciting new multiplayer action shooter based on a major global IP license.” The anticipated release date for this title is set for 2025, which aligns with the recent ESRB rating.
Reflecting on the original game, it garnered a score of 73 from Robert Zak in his review, acknowledging that while it may not be a masterpiece, it succeeded as a cooperative shooter. He noted that it leaned more towards the “trashy” aspects of its franchise rather than the artful, yet it effectively captured the action-movie intensity that fans have come to expect.
As anticipation builds for what seems to be an inevitable sequel, there is hope that Cold Iron Studios will refine and expand upon the foundations laid by the first installment, delivering an experience that resonates even more deeply with players.
