It’s been over two decades since the inception of Old School Runescape, a journey marked by significant transformations within the expansive realm of Gielinor. The game has recently reached a milestone, as its world map is now fully illuminated, marking the end of an era characterized by the enigmatic black boxes that once dotted its landscape. While the overworld has been charted, the vast blue ocean remains a canvas of mystery, inviting players to speculate about the untold adventures that lie beneath its surface. The long-anticipated skill of Sailing, a concept that has circulated among the community for years, is set to launch on November 19, bringing with it the promise of exploration and discovery.
Charting New Waters
The lore surrounding Sailing has been a longstanding narrative thread in Runescape’s history. Players have long relied on NPCs for maritime journeys, from the iconic Lady Lumbridge ferrying adventurers to Crandor to the Tempoross party boat. Yet, the ability to commandeer one’s own vessel and navigate the uncharted waters has remained elusive. The concept of Sailing first gained traction in 2007, only to be revisited in subsequent years through playful April Fool’s jokes and community polls. It wasn’t until 2023 that players finally embraced the idea, allowing Jagex to move forward with its development.
Kieren Charles, the design director, reflects on the enduring allure of the ocean: “It fits the thematics of the game incredibly well. It’s a section you’ve never really been able to do much with. What’s undiscovered? What islands could you find?” This sentiment resonates deeply with the community, as the anticipation for Sailing has grown over the years.
Ed Pilkington, the principal narrative designer, adds a touch of humor to the situation: “With Old School, it’s all about being ‘old school.’ And in some weird, strange way, there’s probably nothing more on brand than the skill that people were joking about.” This blend of nostalgia and innovation encapsulates the essence of the upcoming feature.
Expanding Horizons
Jagex has steadily expanded Gielinor’s landmass, notably with the introduction of the continent of Zeah in 2016. The recent content updates have enriched the game, but Sailing promises to introduce a diverse array of biomes, each with unique resources and creatures. The team is also focused on ensuring that the ocean is teeming with activities, transforming it from a vast expanse into a vibrant playground for players.
Elena Nordmark, the senior game designer, emphasizes the importance of content density at sea, noting the challenges of creating an engaging experience in such a different environment compared to land. “If you look at Lumbridge, for example, you have a million things to do around there. But when we looked at the sea, we were like, ‘Are we even trying to replicate that?’” The balance between realism and engagement is a delicate dance, and the team is committed to striking it just right.
Innovative Mechanics
For the first time, players will experience a new speed of movement while sailing, allowing for a dynamic interaction with the world. Charles describes the exhilaration of moving faster across the ocean, highlighting how this new mechanic fundamentally alters the gameplay experience. “It’s awesome that a new skill can introduce basically a new way to interact with the world,” he notes, reflecting on the monumental technical challenges that have accompanied this innovation.
As the team delved into the mechanics of Sailing, they faced numerous hurdles, particularly in making ships function seamlessly within the game. “We’re using something we called World entities to make them happen,” Charles explains. The complexity of ship movement required extensive prototyping and player testing, ensuring that the final product would meet the high expectations of the community.
Integration and Balance
Unlike previous skills, Sailing is intricately woven into the fabric of over ten other skills, potentially reshaping the way players progress in the game. The integration of skills like Construction, Crafting, and Smithing into the Sailing experience is designed to maintain a sense of continuity within the Old School ecosystem. Pilkington emphasizes the importance of this integration, stating, “We knew very early on that a potential risk with Sailing is that it could feel too detached from the rest of the game.”
However, the challenge lies in ensuring that Sailing does not overshadow existing skills. Charles acknowledges the need for balance, stating, “If almost every skill is involved, Sailing becomes more important than other skills.” The team is keenly aware of the need to maintain player agency and avoid overwhelming the game’s existing structure.
Narrative Cohesion
From a narrative perspective, the introduction of Sailing posed potential challenges, particularly regarding existing quests. Fortunately, the groundwork laid by previous writers has allowed for a smooth integration. Pilkington recounts the realization that many narrative elements had already anticipated the arrival of Sailing, alleviating concerns about retrofitting the quest library.
As Jagex prepares for the first public alpha and beta testing phases, the community’s feedback has been invaluable. While some skepticism remains, the overall sentiment is shifting towards excitement. Charles expresses optimism: “It feels like we’ve now culminated and are hopefully delivering something that people are buzzing for.” With the Sailing update on the horizon, the anticipation is palpable, and players are eager to embark on new adventures across the high seas.
