How to replace your Windows 11 Start menu with something better – try my favorite or this free option

The Windows 11 Start menu has been a source of frustration for many users, who have found its layout cumbersome and its customization options lacking. Despite attempts by Microsoft to enhance the menu, including the introduction of folder creation for shortcuts in late 2022 and a more significant redesign in October 2025, the Start menu still leaves much to be desired. Users have expressed their discontent, prompting the search for more user-friendly alternatives.

Switch to an alternative

For those dissatisfied with the default Start menu, several third-party applications offer a more customizable and familiar experience. Among these, Start11 stands out as a favored choice. Other notable options include StartAllBack and Open Shell Menu, each providing unique features to enhance user experience.

Start11 (my favorite replacement menu)

Stardock’s Start11 is available for .99 annually or for a permanent license. It offers a selection of seven different layouts, including styles reminiscent of Windows 7 and 10, as well as several variations of Windows 11. The two-column layout, which I personally prefer, allows users to organize apps and shortcuts efficiently.

Customization is a key feature of Start11. Users can adjust the menu’s appearance, including its width and icon sizes, and can also modify the taskbar’s color and transparency. This flexibility extends to the ability to rename, move, and delete folders directly from the Start menu, a functionality reminiscent of earlier Windows versions. Should users wish to return to the default menu, uninstalling Start11 is a straightforward process.

StartAllBack (basic and more affordable)

For those seeking a more budget-friendly option, StartAllBack is priced at .99 per license. This program offers a simpler interface while still allowing users to select from three themes: Proper 11, Kinda 10, and Remastered 7. Each theme presents a traditional two-column layout, with options to customize icon sizes and display settings.

StartAllBack also enhances the taskbar, enabling users to select a custom image for the Start button and adjust the taskbar’s position and style. Additionally, it provides access to classic File Explorer features, allowing users to choose between the ribbon interface or command bar, and restore familiar context menus from previous Windows versions.

Open Shell Menu (a free alternative)

For those who prefer a no-cost solution, Open Shell Menu is a free alternative that integrates seamlessly with Windows 11. After installation, users can select from various layouts, including classic one-column and two-column designs. The program allows for customization of the Start button and offers options for displaying recent or frequently used programs.

While Open Shell Menu may not boast the polish of its paid counterparts, it provides a solid foundation for users seeking a more traditional Start menu experience without incurring any costs. As with the other alternatives, uninstalling Open Shell Menu will revert the system back to the standard Windows 11 Start menu.
