Valve Expands Steam with Android Games Support
Valve has unveiled its latest addition to the gaming world – the Steam Frame VR headset, set to launch next year. This new hardware will not only bring a console-like PC, VR headset, and controller to the market but also support for Android games on Steam.
According to reports from The Verge, the Steam Frame will be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, allowing it to run the same APK files used on Android devices and the Meta Quest VR headset. This move is expected to bring more native VR games to the Steam platform, providing an exciting opportunity for gamers.
The Steam Frame will run on Linux-based SteamOS, eliminating the need for translation thanks to the Snapdragon chip’s high performance capabilities. Valve plans to offer developer kits to teams working on similar hardware, making it easier to port games between different headsets.
While non-gaming Android apps may not be available on Steam, the Frame will support native Android APK sideloading, giving users more flexibility in choosing their gaming titles. With Valve’s focus on ARM support, the future looks promising for portable gaming options like the Steam Deck 2.
