Android 17 to Make Installing Third-Party App Stores Easier

Google is embarking on a transformative journey for Android users, set to revolutionize the way they engage with third-party app stores. With the upcoming release of Android 17, the tech giant will unveil the concept of “Registered App Stores,” a significant step towards enhancing user experience and accessibility.

Google will introduce “Registered App Stores” in Android 17

This initiative appears to be a direct response to Google’s recent proposed settlement with Epic Games. Sameer Samat, Google’s President of Android Ecosystem, articulated the vision behind this change: “Together with Epic Games we have filed a proposed set of changes to Android and Google Play that focus on expanding developer choice and flexibility, lowering fees, and encouraging more competition all while keeping users safe.”

Under this new framework, third-party app stores that receive certification as “Registered App Stores” will undergo a verification process by Google. Starting with Android 17, users will enjoy a streamlined experience when installing these certified stores directly from their websites. The installation process will be simplified to a single screen, employing neutral language to clearly outline the necessary permissions.

The installation journey will consist of three straightforward steps. Initially, users will encounter a prominent download button upon visiting the store’s website, accompanied by a showcase of featured and popular apps for exploration.

In the second step, a banner will inform users that they are about to install a registered app store. It will clarify that this installation will enable the store to manage apps on the device. Additionally, the screen will provide essential links to the store’s Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, Trust & Safety policies, and Customer Support, ensuring users have access to all pertinent information prior to proceeding.

Finally, the confirmation screen will express gratitude to the user for downloading the store, while offering a direct option to open it immediately. This thoughtful approach not only enhances user engagement but also fosters a sense of security and transparency in the installation process.
