Dean Hall, the visionary behind the popular survival game DayZ, has taken a moment to address a pressing issue within the gaming community: the stigma surrounding video game release delays. His latest project, Icarus, initially launched on PC in 2021 and has since undergone a series of updates to enhance player experience.
In late January, the announcement of Icarus’ console version was met with excitement, slated for release on February 26. However, just weeks later, the date was pushed back to March 26, allowing the development team additional time to refine gameplay and ensure a polished launch. In light of this, Hall hosted an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit, encouraging players to engage in a dialogue about game delays and their implications.
Encouraging Open Dialogue
During the AMA, Hall highlighted four significant delays associated with projects from his studio, RocketWerkz. These included:
- The Dangerous Horizons DLC for Icarus, which has faced multiple postponements since its announcement.
- Stationeers, which has been in Early Access for a decade.
- Kitten Space Agency, where the public build was delayed to ensure quality.
- The current console version of Icarus.
Hall emphasized the importance of players voicing their support for delays when necessary, arguing that developers often feel pressured to meet target release dates. “Games cost a lot of money to make,” he explained. “Timing can significantly impact the overall cost, leading to substantial consequences if a game is released prematurely.” He noted that while players desire quality, developers sometimes become fixated on launch dates due to revenue pressures and public perception.
“We are here today to break this perception,” Hall stated. He underscored that rushing a game to meet a deadline often contributes to a detrimental ‘crunch culture’ within the industry. “Let us normalize delaying games,” he urged, reminding consumers of their influence in shaping the expectations of platform holders like Xbox and PlayStation.
Understanding the Reasons Behind Delays
As the conversation unfolded, Hall was asked to shed light on the less-discussed reasons for game delays. “Most delays occur due to a failure to achieve the desired quality,” he responded. He elaborated that even when developers strive for excellence, financial constraints can hinder their ability to deliver a polished product. This was a challenge faced during Icarus’ initial launch, resulting in mixed reviews on Steam.
“As our studio gained more financial security, we aimed to break this cycle,” Hall shared. He explained the rigorous process the team undertakes before a launch, which includes playing the game as consumers would and conducting ‘go/no-go’ meetings to assess whether they meet their quality standards.
Addressing a player’s comment about the perception of delays, Hall acknowledged that developers often communicate through layers of marketing and management, which can obscure genuine dialogue with the community. “It’s crucial to be authentic when engaging with players,” he remarked. “Sometimes, that means delivering news they may not want to hear.”
He concluded by emphasizing the importance of transparency in discussing delays, sharing specific reasons such as insufficient mission content or unresolved bugs that detract from the overall experience.
Icarus is currently available for pre-order on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Hall shared a personal note, advising against pre-ordering games, while also recognizing the commercial necessity of doing so to capture the attention of console platforms.
