“Where does Xbox fit all of a sudden?”: Former Microsoft VP says it “maybe” should have taken “full advantage of Minecraft” while it had a chance instead of getting distracted by Bethesda exclusives

Peter Moore, the former head of Xbox and Sega, recently shared his insights on Microsoft’s handling of Minecraft, a franchise that has captivated millions worldwide. In a conversation with GamesBeat, Moore expressed his belief that Microsoft has yet to fully leverage the potential of Minecraft since acquiring Mojang.

Missed Opportunities in User-Generated Content

Moore pointed out that Minecraft was designed with a unique opportunity in mind: the integration of artificial intelligence to foster continuous evolution within the game. He noted that the platform’s capacity for user-generated content is reminiscent of popular games like Fortnite. However, he observed that Microsoft’s focus has shifted towards more high-profile acquisitions, such as Activision Blizzard and Bethesda, which come with their own allure and hefty price tags.

“These are the moments when Microsoft jumps in like that—where does Xbox fit all of a sudden? Where does the old business model fit?” Moore questioned, highlighting the challenges faced by the company in integrating new acquisitions while maintaining a coherent strategy for Xbox.

As Moore elaborated on the implications of these acquisitions, he remarked, “You’re no longer a first party. I don’t think, once you start making the acquisitions that they did, because you can’t spend that kind of money and keep everything as an exclusive on your console. The math doesn’t math.”

While Minecraft does feature an in-game store that allows players to join a partner program and contribute content to the Minecraft Marketplace, Moore pointed out that it lacks the expansive platform capabilities seen in Roblox or Fortnite. Nevertheless, with Minecraft holding the title of the best-selling game of all time, it seems unlikely that Microsoft is regretting its investment in the franchise anytime soon.
