Google’s killing QR code sign-ins for Messages on the web

The Google Messages web application is set to undergo a significant change, as users are being informed that the convenient QR code login option will soon be discontinued. A warning has appeared within the app, alerting users that they will no longer be able to scan a QR code from their smartphones to access their messages on the web.

A user known as Peacefullyinsane94 shared a screenshot of this warning on the Google Messages subreddit, and many others have confirmed seeing the same notification. The message clearly states that “QR code pairing is going away soon,” and it encourages users to sign in to the web app using their Google account credentials before this transition takes place.

Transitioning to Google Account Sign-In

The QR code method has allowed users to quickly log into Google Messages on the web by scanning a code with their phone, which is linked to the Google Messages Android app. However, this will soon be replaced by a more traditional login process using Google account credentials.

Once users sign in through the web app, they will need to open the Messages app on their mobile device. A simple security check will follow, requiring users to select one of three emojis displayed on the web app to complete the pairing process.

For those who wish to manage their device pairings, access can be revoked easily. Users can do this by tapping their profile picture, selecting Device pairing, and then clicking the X icon next to the pairing they wish to terminate.

Currently, users have the option to sign in using their Google account, which the warning suggests could help prevent any service interruptions once the QR code pairing feature is phased out. While the exact timeline for this change remains uncertain, Google has indicated that it will occur “soon.”
