Android Auto is getting video apps, music updates, and more Gemini smarts

Google is set to enhance the Android Auto experience significantly throughout 2026, introducing a series of updates that promise to elevate in-car entertainment and navigation. Among the most notable advancements is the integration of video apps, allowing users to enjoy platforms such as YouTube in their vehicles. This feature will support 60fps and FHD video playback in select models from manufacturers including BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata, and Volvo.

As part of this rollout, Google has also implemented an audio-only mode for video apps, which activates automatically when the vehicle transitions from park to drive. This feature has already been partially launched on YouTube, ensuring that drivers can maintain focus on the road while still enjoying audio content.

Enhanced Audio Features

In addition to video capabilities, Android Auto will expand its audio offerings with Dolby Atmos support for compatible apps and vehicles. This enhancement will further enrich the listening experience for users of supported brands, including BMW, Genesis, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata, and Volvo.

Media applications on Android Auto are also set to receive a design overhaul, providing users with greater flexibility and improved interfaces. Google has previewed these enhancements with popular platforms like Spotify and YouTube Music, showcasing a more intuitive user experience.

Immersive Navigation and New Features

The rollout of Google Maps Immersive Navigation continues, featuring a redesigned interface that utilizes edge-to-edge maps for a more engaging visual experience. For vehicles equipped with “Google built-in” (Android Automotive), this update will include live lane guidance, leveraging the vehicle’s front-facing camera to deliver real-time lane assistance.

Moreover, Android Automotive vehicles will benefit from upgraded media applications and the introduction of audio-only modes from Android Auto. Excitingly, a Zoom app for Android Auto is also anticipated to launch within the year, further expanding the platform’s functionality.

Introducing Gemini Intelligence

Another significant addition is the forthcoming Gemini Intelligence, which aims to enhance user interaction by understanding context and facilitating tasks on behalf of the driver. This feature will allow users to send addresses through Android Auto message notifications and even initiate orders via DoorDash through voice commands, exemplifying the seamless integration of technology into everyday driving experiences.
