Microsoft has announced a significant update to the Start menu in Windows 11, addressing long-standing user feedback regarding its size and functionality. The tech giant has recognized that the revamped Start menu, which features a new categories layout and enhanced customization options, has been a source of frustration for many users, particularly those with smaller screens. Reports indicate that the new Start menu can occupy nearly 70% of screen space on devices like a 14-inch laptop, prompting calls for a more adaptable solution.
In response to these concerns, Microsoft is set to introduce resizing options for the Start menu, a feature reminiscent of Windows 10, where users could easily adjust the menu size by dragging its edges. While this specific functionality will not return, users will soon have the ability to choose between two new layouts: small and large. This change aims to provide a more tailored experience, allowing users to select a menu size that better fits their preferences and screen dimensions.
Microsoft is testing new customization options for the Start menu
In addition to size adjustments, Microsoft is enhancing the customization capabilities of the Start menu. Users will now have the option to hide specific sections within the menu, such as the Pinned section or the Recommended feed. This means that individuals can streamline their Start menu to display only the elements they find most useful. For instance, one could opt for a minimalist view featuring solely pinned apps, thereby eliminating distractions from the Recommended and All apps sections.
Furthermore, the Recommended feed is set to receive improvements, allowing users to disable it in the Start menu without impacting the Recent section in the taskbar’s jump list or File Explorer’s Home tab. This flexibility is particularly advantageous for those who prefer a cleaner interface. Another noteworthy addition is the ability to hide the user’s name and profile picture in the Start menu, a thoughtful feature for users who frequently share their screens.
Microsoft has confirmed that these updates will be rolled out over the coming weeks, with plans for additional features on the horizon. Currently, the company is also testing a movable and smaller taskbar in preview builds, alongside a roadmap that includes up to 18 major changes to Windows 11 in the near future. These enhancements are expected to refine the user experience further, addressing concerns about ads in the Out-Of-Box Experience (OOBE) and introducing a WinUI-based Start menu, among other improvements.
