NordVPN’s New App Acts as an All-in-One Digital Privacy and Security Hub

A virtual private network (VPN) serves as a valuable tool for concealing your online activities; however, it does not safeguard against the perils of clicking on fraudulent banking links or downloading harmful files. In response to this growing concern, NordVPN has announced an innovative enhancement to its VPN application, integrating antivirus features more prominently within the platform. This strategic shift marks NordVPN’s evolution into a comprehensive digital privacy and security service.

According to Domininkas Virbickas, the product director at NordVPN, the revamped app is structured around three core pillars: Connect, Protect, and Monitor. This means users can now access a suite of tools—including VPN services, scam and phishing protection, and monitoring capabilities like Dark Web Monitor—all from a single application, eliminating the need to juggle multiple products.

NordVPN’s transition reflects a broader understanding of the online threat landscape, which has expanded beyond conventional malware to encompass phishing schemes, counterfeit online stores, fraudulent communications, identity theft, and account takeover attempts. Traditional antivirus solutions primarily focus on detecting malicious files; however, NordVPN’s approach aims to intercept threats earlier in the process, preventing users from inadvertently sharing sensitive information or engaging with harmful content.

In an email exchange with CNET, Virbickas elaborated on the company’s next-generation antivirus system, which employs a dual-layer detection strategy. The first layer operates at the web level, where URLs and domains are evaluated in real-time through a combination of threat intelligence feeds, rule-based systems, and machine learning models tailored to identify specific threats, such as phishing URLs and scam patterns. Should a threat bypass this initial layer, the second layer activates file scanning, utilizing machine learning models designed to detect malware before it executes.

Today’s scams are built around deception

Virbickas emphasized that contemporary online threats increasingly rely on deception rather than solely on malicious files. Users often find themselves unwittingly disclosing credentials, banking details, or other sensitive information through fake websites, deceptive messages, scam calls (which exploit spoofing and impersonation), or various forms of social engineering. Marijus Briedis, NordVPN’s CTO, noted that while the term “antivirus” is frequently used as a catch-all for digital security, the nature of threats has evolved significantly. “Modern protection should address the real risks people face online today, from phishing and scams to malicious downloads,” he stated.

In April alone, NordVPN’s protection technologies successfully blocked 4.8 million threat events, encompassing malware, phishing attempts, scams, malicious websites, and other dubious content encountered by users. As the practice of data harvesting intensifies, the importance of privacy cannot be overstated. Virbickas articulated NordVPN’s privacy philosophy, which centers on “collecting the minimum signal needed to make a threat decision,” with local checks performed on devices whenever feasible. In instances where server-based analysis is necessary, any identifying information is stripped from the data.

It is important to note that not all features are available across every NordVPN plan. The company currently offers three tiers: Basic, Complete, and Prime, each accompanied by a 30-day money-back guarantee and options for online upgrades or feature additions. By consolidating privacy and antivirus tools within a single application, NordVPN aims to streamline online protection, making it feel less fragmented and eliminating the need for multiple downloads. Nevertheless, it is crucial to remember that no single app can render users immune to the diverse array of cybersecurity threats. Maintaining strong passwords, enabling multifactor authentication, keeping software updated, and exercising caution with suspicious links remain essential practices for safeguarding one’s digital presence.
