This fan remake of 1999’s Medal of Honor proved so popular that its creator added a level cut from the original game

In a notable turn of events for the Medal of Honor franchise, EA’s recent ventures may have shifted focus away from the series, especially following the mixed reception of Respawn’s VR spinoff. However, the legacy of this World War II shooter, which played a pivotal role in shaping the first-person shooter genre, continues to resonate with a dedicated fanbase. This was recently highlighted by the efforts of a developer known as Elber88, who has taken it upon himself to breathe new life into the original Medal of Honor, first released on PlayStation in 1999.

Reviving a Classic

Utilizing Unreal Engine 4, Elber88 has crafted a ground-up remake that stays true to the original game’s logic and assets from Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. This innovative approach allows players to experience the series’ debut on PC for the very first time, a feat that has been met with enthusiasm from long-time fans of the franchise.

The response to this remake has been overwhelmingly positive, prompting Elber to further enhance the project. The latest update, version 1.1 of the Medal of Honor Retro Remake, introduces several improvements and includes an additional level that was originally cut from the game. This previously unseen mission, which exists in various screenshots and data files, is rumored to involve intelligence gathering and the assassination of a castle commandant.

Elber88 expressed his excitement about the project on ModDB, stating, “I am glad to invite you to play the updated versions 1.1 of the remake, which to my surprise has become very popular not only among fans of the original MOH but also among ordinary players. This inspired me to continue working in my free time and do it for the community.”

Having sampled the earlier version of the remake, it is evident that Elber88 has crafted a commendable tribute to the original title. While the absence of the original game’s animations was a minor drawback, the remake offers an engaging opportunity for those unfamiliar with the pre-Allied Assault entries in the series to experience a piece of gaming history.
