Facebook and its messaging counterpart, Messenger, are currently experiencing a significant global outage, rendering them inaccessible to users worldwide. In contrast, other platforms under the Meta umbrella, such as Instagram and WhatsApp, appear to be functioning normally, much to the relief of their users.
Service Disruptions
According to DownDetector, a service that monitors the real-time status of online platforms, there has been a notable surge in reports regarding Facebook’s functionality since 2 PM on Friday, June 12. Concurrently, Messenger has also seen a similar increase in user complaints, while Instagram, despite some reports, remains operational at this time.
Users have turned to alternative social media channels, including X (formerly Twitter), to express their frustrations about the inability to access Facebook. Those attempting to log in are met with a message indicating that ‘This page isn’t available at the moment’ and suggesting that the issue may stem from a technical error that the company is actively addressing.
In a statement on X, Meta spokesperson Andy Stone acknowledged the situation, stating, “We’re aware people are currently having trouble accessing our services. We’re working on it.”
Impact on Business Services
Meta maintains a status page for its business products, which currently indicates ‘high disruptions’ affecting Facebook Ads Manager, Messenger API for Instagram, Messenger Platform, and WhatsApp Business Platform. While the majority of other business products are reported to have ‘no known issues,’ it is worth noting that Meta does not provide a status page for its consumer-facing services.
As the situation unfolds, users and businesses alike are left to navigate the temporary disruption, hoping for a swift resolution from the tech giant.
