Windows 11 Adoption Trends
Since its debut in 2021, Windows 11 has experienced a gradual uptake, finally surpassing the long-standing Windows 10 nearly four years post-launch. Projections indicate that the operating system will reach the significant milestone of 1 billion users by 2026. Recent insights from Valve’s Steam Hardware and Software survey suggest a positive trajectory for Windows 11, particularly in the realm of PC gaming.
The May 2026 survey reveals a notable 2.02% increase in the number of gamers utilizing Windows 11, while Windows 10 has seen a decline of 1.64%, and Linux has dropped by 0.53%. This shift occurs amidst Valve’s continuous efforts to promote SteamOS, despite the ongoing declarations of it being “the year of the Linux desktop.” However, the overall impact on the user share remains modest, with Windows gaining only 0.38% and macOS adding 0.15% to its share.
It is essential to consider the demographic nuances within the survey, as English-language users are somewhat overrepresented, showing a 2.71% increase compared to the previous survey. Such biases can influence results, as certain user groups may exhibit preferences that reinforce their existing choices in operating systems and hardware.
In terms of hardware, the survey results reflect a stable environment, with 16 GB of RAM and 1080p monitor resolution maintaining their status as the industry standard, despite a slight dip in market share for the latter. The graphics card landscape remains dominated by the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060, which continues to be the most popular choice among gamers on Steam.
Additionally, it appears that a fix for Steam’s recent issues with detecting Radeon GPUs has successfully transitioned out of beta. The survey indicates a 1.24% gain for the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT, suggesting a positive response from users following the resolution of these detection challenges.
