Microsoft extends free Windows 10 security updates for consumers

Microsoft has quietly announced an extension to its free Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for consumers, now allowing enrolled devices to receive essential security updates until October 12, 2027. This change was not heralded with a grand announcement; rather, it surfaced in updates to Microsoft’s ESU documentation and an editor’s note on a recent Windows Experience Blog post, as reported by Bleeping Computer.

Transitioning to Windows 11

This extension offers users additional time to transition to a new Windows 11 PC while ensuring they continue to receive critical security updates. Windows 10 officially reached its end of support on October 14, 2025, which means that Microsoft will no longer provide technical support, feature updates, or security updates for the operating system, with the exception of certain Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) versions.

Initially, Microsoft had set the expiration date for the free ESU program at October 12, 2026. In contrast, enterprise customers had access to the ESU program for up to three years, albeit at a cost. With this recent update, the free consumer ESU program now extends for an additional year, running through October 12, 2027.

How to Access Extended Security Updates

Consumers can continue to benefit from these extended security updates at no cost by following a few simple steps:

  • Backing up their Windows settings to their Microsoft account.
  • Redeeming 1,000 Microsoft reward points.
  • For users in the European Economic Area, logging into Windows 10 with a Microsoft account.

An ESU license can be utilized across up to 10 devices linked to the same Microsoft account, making it a convenient option for households with multiple personal devices. However, it’s important to note that the program is designed specifically for personal devices and is not available for systems managed through Active Directory or Mobile Device Management. That said, devices registered with Microsoft Entra are eligible for this program.
