Google is currently enhancing its Gboard application for Android, aiming to introduce a range of new features that promise to elevate user experience. In the latest beta version, Gboard v17.7.4.932364120, several intriguing functionalities have been uncovered that could significantly improve the keyboard’s usability.
New Features on the Horizon
One of the most anticipated additions is a cursor mode, which Google has been developing since early this year. Although not yet activated, users can now enable a setting that allows them to long-press the spacebar to switch to this cursor mode. Alternatively, users can still swipe on the spacebar to control the cursor, providing flexibility in navigation.
This optional feature is designed with user preference in mind, ensuring that those who prefer the traditional keyboard experience can continue using it without disruption.
In addition to cursor functionality, Gboard is also exploring a new emoji customization option. Initially, it was thought that emoji sizes would scale according to font size settings, but the latest updates indicate a shift towards allowing users to adjust emoji sizes independently. A newly introduced slider will enable users to choose how many emojis can be displayed in a single row, ranging from five to nine. Special options labeled “7+” and “8+” will allow for slightly larger emojis while maintaining a fixed number on the screen.
Enhanced Keyboard Layouts
Another noteworthy feature under development is the potential for Gboard to display full-sized keyboard keys on mobile devices. This feature, which can be toggled using the “Show accessibility layout” setting, is currently not available in the beta but has been successfully activated through some adjustments. Users will have the option to choose from three layouts: QWERTY, QWERTZ, and AZERTY.
While the practicality of full-sized keys on a smartphone may be questionable, this feature could be particularly beneficial for Android tablets or in scenarios like Pixel’s Desktop Mode, where a larger display can accommodate such a layout more effectively.
As Google continues to refine these features, the timeline for their public release remains uncertain. The tech community eagerly awaits further updates, as these enhancements could redefine the Gboard experience for millions of users worldwide.
⚠️ It is important to note that an APK teardown serves as a predictive tool for potential future features based on ongoing development. However, there is no guarantee that all identified features will ultimately be included in a public release.
