Microsoft Edge has recently undergone an update that enhances its compatibility with Google services, a move that many users are likely to appreciate. With the latest version, users can now sign in to Edge using their Google account, simplifying the process of importing bookmarks, browsing history, and other content into the browser. This feature is part of a controlled rollout that commenced with version 150.0.4078.48 of Edge, and while it may take some time to reach all users, the update is officially being distributed to everyone.
Microsoft Edge (July 2026 Update): Feature Updates
- Clarify choices surrounding third-party cookie settings: The language in ‘Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Cookies’ has been refined to better articulate the options available to users for managing third-party cookies.
- Sign in to Edge with a Google account: In addition to Microsoft accounts, users can now sign in to Microsoft Edge using a Google account via the profile menu and Edge sign-in screen. This feature is available for both Windows and macOS devices, with administrators having the ability to control its availability through the NonMicrosoftAccountSignInEnabled policy. Note: This feature is being rolled out gradually, so if it’s not yet visible, users are encouraged to check back later.
- Intune MAM Protected Downloads: The protected downloads feature for Intune MAM now directs downloaded files to the ‘Documents > Microsoft Edge > Downloads’ folder within OneDrive, enhancing file management.
- Enterprise WebView2 runtime downgrade via DowngradeVersion policy: With the introduction of Microsoft Edge version 150, enterprises can utilize the ‘DowngradeVersion’ policy to revert WebView2 applications to a previous version. This allows administrators to address critical regressions by specifying executable-to-version mappings, with the Edge Updater facilitating side-by-side installations of target versions.
- Update to the “View in File Explorer” feature: The View in File Explorer feature has been updated to enforce additional validation and restrictions when triggered by webpages, particularly in SharePoint document libraries, thereby enhancing security.
- Security Update Alerts in the Edge management service: Administrators can now set a severity threshold to receive alerts for new Microsoft Edge updates that include security fixes meeting or exceeding that level, including zero-day fixes. This feature, currently in public preview, allows organizations to quickly identify critical updates while minimizing notifications for routine releases.
Additionally, Microsoft has announced the retirement of the Sidebar app list, reminding users of the ongoing evolution of Edge as it adapts to meet modern user needs.
