Valve’s latest innovation, the Steam Machine, continues to push the boundaries of gaming by blending the console experience with the versatility of a PC. Outfitted with SteamOS right from the start, users can dive directly into their game libraries without navigating the complexities of a traditional desktop operating system like Windows.
However, the Steam Machine retains its identity as a standard PC, allowing users the freedom to install alternative operating systems. Many gamers may opt for Windows, particularly as developers are increasingly focusing on creating Linux-compatible anti-cheat solutions. To facilitate this transition, Valve has taken a significant step by releasing official drivers that ensure smooth functionality across essential hardware components.
Windows on the Steam Machine
On its support page, Valve clarifies that the Steam Machine is designed to accommodate various operating systems, and to assist users in this endeavor, a comprehensive suite of Windows drivers has been made available. These drivers encompass crucial components such as the graphics processor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and the SD card reader, ensuring that users can maximize their hardware’s potential after installation.
It is important to note that these resources are provided “as is,” meaning Valve does not extend official technical support for those who choose to run Windows on their Steam Machine. Should any complications arise, or if users wish to revert to SteamOS, Valve advises following their official recovery instructions to restore the device to its original state.
- Installing Windows necessitates a complete wipe of the Steam Machine, eliminating SteamOS in the process. Dual-booting with SteamOS is currently not supported.
- While both the Steam Deck and Steam Machine can technically dual-boot, the SteamOS installer that facilitates this process is not yet available. It will be released alongside the completion of SteamOS.

For those eager to install Windows, Valve has provided specific installation notes. To access the boot menu on the Steam Machine, users must fully power off the device and then restart it while repeatedly pressing the Escape key until the boot menu appears. Additionally, since the Windows setup requires an internet connection for product key entry and other setup steps, users should connect the Steam Machine via Ethernet during installation. This is necessary as Wi-Fi functionality will only be restored after the installation of the official wireless drivers.
