Microsoft intervenes after LG gets caught installing McAfee adware onto Windows 11 PCs via their monitors

A recent discovery has stirred significant discontent among users of LG monitors, revealing that adware was being automatically installed when these monitors were connected to Windows PCs. This unexpected behavior resulted in intrusive popups promoting applications like McAfee, which users found difficult to dismiss. The backlash on social media was swift and intense, drawing the attention of Microsoft.

Microsoft’s Intervention

In response to the growing outrage, Microsoft has confirmed that it has taken action by reaching out to LG to address the situation. Pavan Davuluri, the chief of Windows, announced that LG has agreed to cease the display of McAfee ads within their monitor popups. In a statement shared on X, he expressed appreciation for LG’s willingness to collaborate, stating, “We appreciate LG working with us toward a shared goal of a better experience for our mutual customers.”

This proactive stance from Microsoft is noteworthy, especially considering that original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) often engage in questionable practices without facing repercussions. Many Windows PCs come preloaded with adware and bloatware, and historically, Microsoft has done little to mitigate this issue.

By directly addressing LG’s practices, Microsoft demonstrates a commitment to enhancing the overall user experience within the Windows ecosystem. This move signals an intention to encourage OEMs to reduce the prevalence of unwanted software on third-party hardware.

The Nature of the Adware

McAfee has become synonymous with pre-installed OEM bloatware, frequently bundled with major Windows hardware alongside other trial applications such as Dropbox and Microsoft Office. However, LG’s adware operates differently; it is installed through a monitor app that is automatically downloaded when an LG monitor is connected to a Windows PC. This app, intended for managing monitor settings, previously included popups advertising products like McAfee.

As of now, it remains uncertain whether LG plans to eliminate these ads permanently or if this decision is merely a temporary measure in response to the backlash. Users hope for a lasting change, as the prospect of being targeted with advertisements simply due to their choice of monitor is far from appealing.
