However, this change has not been without contention. Epic Games has expressed dissatisfaction regarding the cumbersome process users must navigate to install these competing marketplaces.
Compliance Challenges and Court Orders
The ongoing legal saga between Epic Games and Google reached a pivotal moment in March 2026 when both parties reached an agreement concerning Android app distribution. Yet, recent compliance hearings have revealed that the implementation of these changes may not be as user-friendly as intended. Epic Games highlighted the numerous steps required for users to install a rival app store, which include various warnings and confirmation screens. For instance, users must first tap a “View” button before they can access the “Install” button. Such additional steps could deter average users from pursuing alternative app stores.
During the latest court proceedings, Judge Donato identified these extra steps as unnecessary “anticompetitive friction.” Consequently, he mandated that Google simplify the installation process, removing these barriers. Google has been given a one-week timeframe to comply with this order, after which users can expect a more streamlined experience when installing rival Android app stores via the Play Store.
Search Results and Visibility Issues
Epic Games also raised concerns regarding the search functionality within Google Play. When users search for terms like “store for apps,” the results predominantly feature physical retail locations, such as Walmart, rather than third-party app stores. Judge Donato deemed this situation “not acceptable” and instructed Google to rectify the search result discrepancies.
As Google navigates these compliance challenges, it is simultaneously preparing to launch a new process for sideloading apps. This initiative is set to begin its initial enforcement phase on September 30, 2026. Users will encounter a series of steps, including a mandatory 24-hour waiting period, further complicating the app installation landscape.
