Samsung Galaxy smartphones have long been recognized for their efficient RAM management, but the upcoming Android 17 promises to elevate this capability even further. Google has rolled out a new feature that imposes per-app memory limits, effectively preventing any single misbehaving application from monopolizing the device’s available RAM. This enhancement is already operational on Pixel devices, with expectations that other Android manufacturers, including Samsung, will embrace it over the next year. While this feature may not be visually striking in promotional materials, its impact on everyday usage could be substantial.

One app won’t be able to take over your RAM

Historically, Android has managed memory in the background, automatically closing older processes when RAM levels dip to accommodate current activities. However, the challenge arises when a poorly optimized app consumes an excessive amount of memory, prompting Android to terminate multiple other applications to keep the problematic one running.

With Android 17, Google introduces a more refined approach. The operating system can now impose memory limits on individual applications. Once an app hits its designated cap, Android first compresses some of its memory pages into a format known as zRAM. Should the app persist in demanding additional memory, Android has the capability to terminate the process altogether. The beauty of this system lies in its subtlety; users are unlikely to notice these adjustments, which is precisely the intention.

This could make multitasking better

The primary objective of this update is not to increase the RAM capacity of Galaxy devices but rather to optimize the utilization of existing memory resources. By restricting any single app from consuming more than its fair share, other applications have a greater opportunity to remain active in the background. This could result in fewer reloads when users switch between applications such as Chrome, Instagram, Maps, and others.

Google has designed this system to function effectively across a range of devices, from those equipped with 4GB to those boasting 16GB or more of RAM, ensuring that it is not limited to high-end flagship models. In fact, more affordable Galaxy devices may reap the most significant benefits. While a Galaxy S26 Ultra with ample RAM can handle extensive multitasking, a Galaxy A-series phone, where every gigabyte counts, stands to gain immensely from this enhancement.

Samsung already has its own tools

Samsung is not starting from scratch in this endeavor. The One UI interface already features memory management tools within Device Care, allowing users to monitor RAM usage and terminate background processes. However, the system introduced in Android 17 operates at a deeper level, applying restrictions on individual apps before they can adversely affect the overall performance of the device.

While Samsung has yet to announce a timeline for the implementation of Google’s new memory limits across its Galaxy lineup, it is worth noting that One UI 9 is built on the foundation of Android 17. Google anticipates that more manufacturers will adopt this feature in the coming year. Although this enhancement may not be the focal point of a major advertising campaign, its potential to keep more applications active and enhance the user experience on Galaxy devices with limited RAM could prove to be a game changer—one that many users might prefer over the latest AI innovations.
